DRAWING THE RULES
We tend to think of cities as the work of architects, planners and builders, but they are just as much the product of rules: codes, standards, zoning bylaws and procurement policies that quietly settle most decisions before a designer picks up a pen. These rule sets carry the values and assumptions of the moment they were written, and they go on shaping streets, buildings and landscapes for generations after those assumptions have stopped making sense. Kelly Alvarez Doran will look at the city as a sediment of its rules. Drawing on Ha/f Climate Design's policy work with the City of Toronto, the City of Vancouver and the Governments of Canada and Rwanda, he'll ask what it means for designers to treat the rules themselves as a site of design. In Florence, a city shaped over centuries by its civic statutes, the evening opens a conversation about who writes the rules of urban form today, and how we need to write differently.
